SUMMARY:Fugitives of the Creative Economy: The labour and resistance of young culture workers in precarious times
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Radical Imagination Project\nIn partnership with the Art & Activism Collective at NSCAD and the Khyber Centre for the Arts\n\nIt’s no secret: work (and lack of work) in the cultural sector in Nova Scotia is tough\, especially for young people. This roundtable discussion and workshop examines the deeper causes and diverse consequences of these trends. But it also offers visions of solidarity and struggle by and for young workers in the ‘creative economy\,’ as well as time to build relationships and new collaborations. \nGuest speakers: Raven Davis\, Max Haiven\, Jonna Pedersen\, Rebecca Rose\, Marina Sitrin and Cassie Thornton. \nThis event will be followed by A Precarious Workers’ Soirée at the Art Bar. \n

DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Cassie Thornton\nPresented by the Art & Activism Collective at NSCAD\nin partnership with the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union\nIn celebration of May Day\, The Feminist Economics Department (The FED) will host happy hour for people who are finished with work. \nOur Happy Hour consists of a traditional overflow of beverages as well as a post-work yoga class. SUMMARY:Precarious Creative Workers of the World: Little Red Songbook Launch
DESCRIPTION:Songbook Launch\, Singalong and Karaoke Party\n$5.00 includes a copy of the songbook\nACT 1- PCWW band will acompany our re-written versions of classic IWW songs (Jeff Gay\, Keith Adams\, Catlin Smith\, Christian Masotti and Ben Ross) \nACT 2- Karaoke party with videos by conceptual karaoke artist Joseph Beuys II Men \nThe Precarious Creative Workers of the World Little Red Songbook is a re-working of the infamous Industrial Workers of the World Little Red Songbook\, a small publication with over 36 editions published over the past 100 years that mobilized union support and solidarity between workers in the 20th century. Throughout the original songbook’s creation\, workers borrowed melodies from folk tunes and hymns\, the popular songs of the day\, re-writing the lyrics to stand up for their rights as labourers against capitalist exploitation. The songbooks were cheaply produced and distributed\, and were used by workers to sing together at meetings\, strikes and rallies. The songbook’s tag line\, “to fan the flames of discontent”\, shows that the songs were intended to refigure\, in the hearts and imaginations of the workers\, their rights and their power in collective action. The PCWWLRSB is an attempt to update the songbook to reflect contemporary labour conditions in the west. \nFor our project\, a large group of precarious creative workers in the area have re-writen these songs to reflect contemporary labour conditions. Together\, we have stayed true to the original text’s intention\, “to fan the flames of discontent”\, and process\, borrowing familiar melodies and re-writing the words. In some cases\, just as the original authors borrowed from contemporary pop music\, so too\, we have lifted melodies from contemporary pop music\, leveraging our common references in mass-media. \nWe have compiled these songs in a book designed after the 1923 edition of the IWW songbook. In ACT 1\, a live band of old-timey musicians will accompany everyone singing new versions of the old songs. In Act 2\, groups of people from the audience will perform karaoke renditions of pop songs. \nLike this one: \n \n

SUMMARY:Honour Your Word
DESCRIPTION:A documentary film by Martha Stiegman\nPresented in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries\nMarylynn Poucachiche and Norman Matchewan faced tear gas and police batons when they joined their parents on the barricades to defend their traditional territory in the 1980s. Little did they realize they would be on the barricades over 20 years later\, this time with their own young children at their sides. \nHonour Your Word is an intimate portrait of life behind the barricades for the Algonquins of Barriere Lake\, an inspiring First Nation whose dignity and courage contrast sharply with the political injustice they face. \nPlease note: The film (60mins) will be preceded by an opening ceremony for the Mayworks Halifax Festival offered by the All Nations Drummers\, and followed by a brief Q&A with filmmaker Martha Stiegman. \n  \n  \n \n
