SUMMARY:Am I Ovary-Acting?
DESCRIPTION:By Lunasea Theatre\n$10 in advance and $15 at the door\n\nIf cost is a barrier\, please reach out to info@mayworkskjipuktukhalifax.ca and we will accommodate you.\n \n  \n    \nChildcare is available for free and on site during the May 10th reception and Q&A. Please register in advance. \nASL interpretation will be available. \n\n \nAm I Ovary-Acting? is a work by LunaSea Theatre about reproductive justice that examines commonly held beliefs about health and medical care for those with ovaries/uteruses/vaginas. Through comedy\, storytelling\, rage and disbelief we explore reproductive health and justice through relevant objects. At Mayworks\, our focus will be the history\, uses and misuses of the speculum. This 50 minute show is part ted-talk\, part conversation\, part storytelling. When it comes to health and reproductive justice the political and social landscape right now is rife with misinformation\, disinformation and half-truths.  We are here to press against that tide with nuanced conversation and evidence-based information in a fun\, curious\, theatrical way. \nCredits:\nCreated and performed by Kathleen Dorian and Ailsa Galbreath \nResearch by Claire Horn \n\n \nKATHLEEN DORIAN (she/her) is a creator/actor based in Dartmouth\, NS (Punamu’kwati’jk). SUMMARY:On the Line - Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:By Audrey Eastwood\nOn display May 1 to June 1\nReception on May 10\, 4:00pm-6:15pm\nArtist Q&A on May 10\, 6:15pm-7:00pm \n    \nChildcare is available for free and on site during the May 10th reception and Q&A. Please register in advance. \nASL interpretation will be available during the May 10 Reception and Q&A \n\nOn the Line is a time-lapse video and photo compilation of six months’ worth of one of domestic labor’s most repetitive and relentless tasks: laundry. By   documenting every load washed\, every dryer load\, and every line of drying clothes\, the project seeks to show the cumulative weight of an everyday chore\,   particularly within the context of parenting and motherhood. \n\n \nAUDREY EASTWOOD is a multi-disciplinary artist\, General Manager of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op\, and Co-Founder and Artistic Producer of Terra Novella Theatre. She has worked as an actor\,  designer\, musician\, technician\, and fight choreographer for a number of Kjipuktuk based companies including Villain’s Theatre\, Kick at the Dark Theatre Co-op\, Halifax Summer Opera\, Halifax Fringe\, Votive Dance and Whale Song Theatre. She is the mother of two young children\, and lives on a small farm with them and her partner Nick. Her artistic practice has shifted in the last few years to try and find space in the small gaps of time between work and childcare: cutting floral designs into sourdough bread\, filling indoor and outdoor spaces with plants\, teaching her kids the names of different birds and trees and how to successfully cut paper without cutting your small fingers\, and by making this art piece out of her never ending laundry pile.

SUMMARY:Found in Translation / Trouvé dans la traduction
DESCRIPTION:By Sometimes in Nova Scotia (SiNS)\n \nMay 10\, 4:00pm-6:15pm (durational – drop in anytime) \n  \n \nCette présentation est présentée en anglais et en français grâce au soutient du gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Écosse.\nLa description ci-bas alterne entre l’anglais et le français. \n \nASL interpretation will be available \nChildcare available on site for free. Please register in advance. / Gardiennage gratuit disponible sur place. SVP instrivez-vous à l’avance (formulaire en anglais). \n\n \nFound in Translation is an interactive performance in which small objects are translated into movement\, drawing\, and poetry through a series of playful transformations. Audience members are invited to join with performers to uncover illuminating potentials in the things that surround us. \nFound in Translation originated as part of Eastern Front Theatre’s Macro Digitals: CONNECTIONS under the guidance of Kat McCormack\, with collaborators Katie Clarke\, Breton Lalama\, Logan Robins\, Gillian Seaward-Boone and Rebecca Wolfe. \n\n \nFound in Translation is an interactive performance that transforms small objects into movement\, drawing\, and poetry through a kind of artistic “assembly line.” Six performers take part at a time\, rotating through all of the roles: hosting\, describing\, drawing\, dancing\, typing poems\, and reading them aloud. Crucially\, the “machine” is always activated by audience participation. An audience member begins each round by arranging objects\, and at the end of the cycle\, they receive the poem that was generated and read out specifically for them – an artistic “gift” created through the collective process. \nEnsemble:\nNadine Sures\nMila Sahmarani\nGeneviève Steele\nWinnie Sherwood\nDaphné Sherwood\nSusan Leblanc\nFrançoise Labelle\nLiliona Quarmyne\nZya Langdon-Quarmyne\nMicaela Comeau\nIsabelle Peart\nJacinte Armstrong \n\n \nJACINTE ARMSTRONG (she/her) is an Acadian artist based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax\, NS. Her work explores embodied practice through performance\, choreography\, collaboration\, and curation\, communicating the experience of the body in relation to objects\, materials\, and people. Her choreography ranges from intimate and imagistic to large-scale collaborations with dancers\, architects\, visual artists\, radio producers\, filmmakers\, actors and musicians. A leader in the Atlantic region\, she is Artistic Director and co-founder of SiNS (Sometimes in Nova Scotia) Dance\, Artistic Director of suddenlyLISTEN\, and collaborates regularly with Mocean Dance. From 2014-18\, she was Artistic Director of Kinetic Studio. \nIn 2016\, Jacinte was awarded an Established Artist Recognition Award by the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council\, and a Masterworks Award for her work in Mocean Dance’s “Canvas 5×5” choreographed by Tedd Robinson. She holds an MFA in Performance from NSCAD University and is a certified in Laban Movement Analysis. \n\nEvent photos by Laura Demers and Daniel Wittnebel\nHeadshot of Jacinte Armstrong by Kevin MacCormack

SUMMARY:Be Eternal
DESCRIPTION:With Jackson Fairfax-Perry\, Andrew Jackson\, Lance Sampson\, Shuvanjan Karmakar and Joshua Awe\nONE TICKET FOR TWO INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCES!\n$10 in advance and $15 at the door.\n**Ticket includes admission to AND SO WE DANCE** \n \nIf cost is a barrier\, please reach out to info@mayworkskjipuktukhalifax.ca and we will accommodate you. \n \nChildcare available on site for free. Please register in advance. \n\nTaking its name from the final line of Common’s acclaimed 2005 album\, Be Eternal explores black male mortality\, particularly of musicians\, and the normalization of this in modern society. Led by local saxophonist Jackson Fairfax-Perry\, this ensemble brings together 5 local improvising musicians with roots connecting to the African diaspora. Exploring both spontaneous and written compositions\, Be Eternal asks how can we move past this mindset that black men die young? That this is just how it is? How can we honour the artists who came before us\, while also giving flowers to the ones who are still with us? This music is raw and mournful\, but it is also filled with joy and hope\, brimming with the power of our ancestors. This is a celebration of our black musical lineage. \nPersonnel:\nJackson Fairfax-Perry – Saxophones \nAndrew Jackson – Trombone \nLance Sampson – Voice \nShuvanjan Karmakar – Bass \nJoshua Awe – Drums \n\n \nJACKON FAIRFAX-PERRY is an award-winning African Nova Scotian composer\, sound designer\, musician\, and musical director based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. A graduate of Dalhousie University (Bachelor of Music in Composition\, 2014)\, Jackson has built a multidisciplinary career that bridges contemporary composition\, popular music\, improvisation\, and theatrical sound design.  For the decade following his graduation\, he recorded and toured nationally and internationally with Hillsburn\, an award-winning indie-pop band. Since 2023\, Jackson has collaborated closely with Lance Sampson\, AKA Aquakultre. As musical director for Sampson’s live performances\, he has co-written\, arranged\, and performed on several of Aquakultre’s recordings\, most notably on the critically acclaimed album 1783. As a saxophonist and keyboardist\, Jackson is an active member of Halifax’s jazz and creative music scene performing regularly with several ensembles including Many Worlds\, as well as his own group TYNES plus III. Jackson also collaborates frequently with theatre and dance artists\, having contributed music and sound design to numerous local and national productions. Jackson is the most recent recipient of the Paul Cram Creation Award\, and is in the process of writing his first composition for orchestra\, to be premiered by Symphony Nova Scotia at Open Waters Festival in January\, 2027. \n \nANDREW JACKSON is a Juno award winning trombonist and composer based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. His versatility and unique sound have made him one of Eastern Canada’s first-call players. Jackson keeps a busy playing schedule with many of the premiere artists in the region\, spanning a variety of styles\, and was selected as a member of the National Canadian Jazz Orchestra. Andrew is a multiple time Music Nova Scotia award winner\, including accolades such as “Musician of the Year” and “Jazz Recording of The Year” amongst others. Since 2017 Andrew has been the musical curator for the TD Halifax Jazz Festival\, which has won multiple “Event of The Year” Awards under his tenure. \n \nLANCE SAMPSON better known as AQUAKULTRE is an uncommonly versatile singer\, rapper\, composer and storyteller from Halifax\, NS. Since winning the 2018 CBC Searchlight competition\, Aquakultre has released two Polaris-nominated albums and a multitude of genre-diverse\, multi-media collaborations\, establishing him as a significant musical and cultural presence. The live show is a warm-hearted party where all are welcomed by Aquakultre’s big voice and bigger stage presence. Through all his works\, via poetic lyrics and straight-up jams\, Aquakultre is on a mission to share his love for his unique and beautiful corner of the culture. \n \nSHUVANJAN KARMAKAR is a bassist. Their practice synthesizes curatorial methodology\, environmental listening\, and diasporic microcosms. Their curatorial tenure\, marked by collaborations with award-winning artists across disciplines\, explored engagement with form\, temporality\, and audience perception. This experience established a foundation in spatial dramaturgy\, critical framing\, and orchestrating sensory experiences. These principles translate into their musical practice\, where they treat sound as an experiential field rather than a linear construct. Shuvanjan’s artistic labor navigates the dialectic between the intrinsic desire to create and the external pressures that necessitate production\, allowing this tension to shape both methodology and output. Their exploration of non-equal-tempered systems\, encompassing microtonality\, just intonation\, and other alternative tuning paradigms\, serves as both a technical and conceptual extension of this inquiry. Challenging hegemonic sonic structures and repositioning the bass as a site of critical experimentation. \n \nJOSHUA AWE is an instinctive drummer who enjoys playing a wide range of musical genres. He often plays with jazz musicians in Halifax\, however\, Joshua has recently been performing with musicians in the folk and oldtime scenes where he usually plays djembe and percussion. Joshua has his roots in Nigeria where he started playing in the church. This is where he learned that music can be used for a spiritual transcendence. His resume includes an extensive list of public and private gigs including the Halifax Jazz Festival\, Every Seeker and Deep Roots Festival. \n\nEvent photo and Jackson Fairfax-Perry headshot by Jamie Kronick\nLance Sampson headshot by Mo Phùng

She incorporates her lived experiences of her own cultural understanding within her artwork. She has a double major in Photography + Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing from NSCAD University. Munro has been facilitating within dance studios\, Halifax Regional Arts\, artist centers\, and community programs for over a decade. Munro continuously seeks to learn new ways of making\, teaching\, collaborating\, and continues to educate herself in a multitude of techniques. She has spent her entire life pursuing art but dancing is the constant base of creating throughout her professional career. Movement is at her core of making. When Munro became a mother\, her exploration into uninhibited linework and freedom of creation was sparked by watching her two young children draw effortlessly and with confidence. These inspirations from her kids showed her new pathways\, and taught her that you can make your own. This naturally led I’thandi into the research behind improv and freestyle dance. Munro uses the representation of line and lineage as underlying concepts in her art. Her work has become an ever-changing body of work that can be explored and realized in many different ways. Munro is the founder of Drifted Collective as well as Scotian: The Collective. She has collaborated with many professional dance and theatre companies primarily based out of Mi’kma’ki and the Atlantic regions such as The Woods Professional Hip Hop Company\, Mocean Dance\, Kinetic\, Rooted Dance(Votive) Nestutasi Story Telling\, Home Economics Collective\, and KasheDance. \n \nKAY MACDONALD (they/them) is an African Nova Scotian\, Acadian\, Queer\, Trans community educator\, artist\, activist\, facilitator\, and performance based artist born and raised in Kjipuktuk\, Mi’kma’ki. DESCRIPTION:Mayworks Momentum presents selections from the Canadian Labour International Film Festival.\nThe Canadian Labour International Film Festival (CLIFF) is in its 17th edition and Mayworks will again present a local satellite screening of short films chosen from this year’s CLIFF selections. \nCLIFF selects films from across the globe that give voice to workers and their struggles for better lives. \nTotal program runtime: 91 minutes \n \n\nFilm Program:\n\nNola\nby Natalie Remplakowski & Aisha Evelyna (Canada: English) – 10 min \n \nA Black woman working as a sous-chef navigates toxic restaurant culture and her wavering mental health\, until a chance encounter changes her. \n\nYour Own Boss\nby Álvaro Guzmán Bastida (Spain: Spanish) – 18 min \n \nA food delivery worker struggles to juggle his responsibilities as a young father with the impossible demands of an algorithm that pushes him to the limit. \n\nWorking For Freedom \nby Conor Devries (Canada: English) – 11 min \n \nWorking for Freedom is a short documentary that follows an Ottawa-based woman through her experiences of prison labour at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. Author of Solidarity behind bars\, Jordan House\, provides us with an overview of the frameworks that allow these exploitative practices to continue today. \n\nShadow Work\nby Gillian McKercher (Canada: English) – 3 min \n \n\n\nThis short documentary looks at “shadow work”: tasks that are not part of an employee’s official job description\, but are necessary for the organization to function\, and may be unpaid and unseen. \nUnpaid labour\, shadow work\, glue work\, organizational citizenship. Whatever you name it\, organizations benefit from it. \n\n\n\nLimerent Pittsburgh\nby Anne Ciecko (USA: English) – 3 min \n \nA videopoem revisiting the rust belt city is a site of rekindling of memories and mythologies of labour and family. \n\nMotown South\nby Samuel George (USA: English) – 20 min \n \n\n\nThe electric vehicle industry is booming in the American South\, so much so that the region has earned the nickname the “Battery Belt”. \nBut why are producers setting up shop in states such as Georgia\, Alabama and Tennessee? In part\, the trend stems from a historic lack of union representation there. But workers – and labor organizers – have noticed. And they are starting to push back. How this emerging dynamic plays out could transform the future of American industry. \n\n\n\nGhost Workers\nby Lisette Olsthoorn (Netherlands: English) – 26 min \n \n\n\nIn a film set in which their home offices have been recreated\, six European microworkers share experiences with the filmmaker and with each other\, offering an affecting critique on changing labour conditions. \nGhost Workers is a cinematic research project into the people conducting the often hidden labor necessary to make artificial intelligence work. Working from home\, not being recognized as a worker by the platforms that they work for and being misunderstood by family and friends all together creates strong feelings of isolation. Therefore\, the filmmaker invited six workers from across Europe to share their work experiences with her and with each other. Focusing on the theme of isolation and recognition as a ‘real worker\,’ the film engages in a collective conversation about this type of work. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Awake and Still Drowning
DESCRIPTION:XOSECRET\nImmerse yourself into a vision of the future…\nTake part in a 30 minute shared experience combining VR and an unsuspecting performance. It is a cautionary fable about the day Nova Scotia becomes an island\, told through a combination of virtual reality and group choreography in which watching and performing signify the high cost of human migration when the exploited ocean takes back what is hers. \nThe experience splits the audience into two groups. The first group transforms into the protagonists\, a flock of little white seabirds\, performing a guided walk along a narrow landscape as directed by the VR headset\, which depicts the rising ocean and disappearing shoreline. The second group waits in line\, witnessing the flock without fully grasping the crisis unfolding inside the headset. Then\, they join the dance\, becoming part of the flock. The cycle continues until no one is left or we must leave the venue. \nParticipation:\nThe experience launches every 20 minutes\, starting at 1pm. Audience members are invited into The Bus Stop Theatre\, where they will be greeted by and given instructions. Once ready\, a group of 5 participants will enter the playing space to learn how to use the VR headsets. The VR experience is approximately 15 minutes. Groups waiting to participate are invited to witness the group ahead of them travel through the experience as a flock. Afterward\, participants are also invited to stay in the theatre as audience members for as long as they would like to witness the experience from the outside\, sitting in the theatre’s audience seating. Individuals can stay as long as they want\, watching multiple performance cycles. \nRegistration in person at the door! Please arrive early and don’t wait till the last shift!\n\nArtists:\nDustin Harvey: Creative Director\nDana Dansereau: Producer\n1UP (formerly Arcade XR): Digital Production\nSue Goyette: Poetry\nRich Aucoin: Music\nGraeme Campbell: Audio Engineering\nMillefiore Clarkes: Film Production\nAidan Searle: Graphic Design\nColleen Arcturus MacIsaac: Illustration + Animation\nGus and Lia Harvey: Narration\nZach Faye: Art Department \nIn Development:\nAWAKE & STILL DROWNING is currently in its final stages of development. SUMMARY:The Only Wealth Is Labour
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Mosher & Hannah Genosko\nWhat gives real value to anything in this world? The work we put into it.\nExploring a key concept in Marx’s labour theory of value\, textile artists Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko draw from the trade unionist tradition of parading crafted banners through city streets. \n‘The Only Wealth Is Labour’ by Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko is a patchwork quilt banner made out of their remaining uniforms from the ‘Portrait of the Artist as an Essential Worker’ quilts\, which were shown during Mayworks 2024. ‘The Only Wealth Is Labour’ quotes a historic union banner created by George Tutill in 1926 for the UK National Winding and General Engineers Society. Mosher and Genosko were struck by this quote and appreciated the simplicity and directness of the statement. With this new banner they moved away from speaking about their specific experiences as essential workers during the pandemic and into a more general call for solidarity and justice with all working people against the forces of inflation\, late capitalism and neoliberalism. \nMosher and Genosko’s banner will be carried alongside two of our Working Class Heritage Tours on May 3rd and 11th\, and otherwise on display at The Bus Stop Theatre throughout the festival. \nArtists\nSarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko are an artist duo collaborating in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. Hannah has a background in printmaking and bookmaking\, Sarah has a background in textiles and community arts. Both are graduates of NSCAD University. Their common ground is exploring labour\, anti-capitalism and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic through quilting. ‘Portrait of the Artist as an Essential Worker’ was their first project reflecting on their roles as essential workers at their jobs with Canada Post and NSLC respectively during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SUMMARY:Where Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:This premiere screening is presented by Students for a Liberated Palestine / Al-Zeitoun University\nProceeds from this screening will be donated to the Obeid Family Fundraiser \n \nWhere Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. \nWe follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We also witness Dr. Gabor Maté offer trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons. \nAncient landscapes bear deep scars\, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation\, expulsions\, imprisonment\, home demolitions\, water deprivation\, and denial of basic human rights. Yet\, through the veil of oppression\, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. \nThis emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty? \nThis screening is supported by Independent Jewish Voices – Halifax\,  The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op and Mayworks Kjipuktuk/Halifax.

SUMMARY:Resting Space
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop by Becoming Old Growth\nWhat is your relationship with rest? Our personal experiences with burnout led us to global rest movements and the anti-capitalist rest manifesto of “Nap Bishop” Tricia Hersey. What changes when we recognize exhaustion as a collective issue rather than a personal one? In this three-hour workshop\, we invite participants into a guided\, communal resting space. Through gentle\, unstructured  opportunities to listen\, write\, draw\, move\, and make sound—or simply rest—the artists will guide participants to reflect on these  questions\, emphasizing the role of rest as a natural and necessary balance to labour. \nParticipants will be invited to share their ideas and experiences with the artists following the workshop session. Cushions and blankets will be available and you are welcome to bring your own comfort items to use during the workshop. \nRegistration Details\nPlease register in advance via this registration form: \n>>REGISTER HERE \nAge:\nWorkshop geared for adults and mature youth. No arts experience required. \nAccessibility:\nPlease indicate accessibility needs in the registration form by Monday\, April 29th. \nNote:\nWe will try to accommodate accessibility requests\, however we cannot guarantee as all requests can be met. We will email you if we cannot fulfill your request. \nChildcare:\nOn site childcare available upon request\, please fill out child care info in the registration form above and submit by Monday\, April 29th. \n \n\nAbout Becoming Old Growth:\nBecoming Old Growth is a multidisciplinary\, participatory trio that uses sound\, listening\, movement and poetry to encourage a deeper inhabitation of place\, awakening our selves and senses to the future already enfolded within past and present. BOG’s kinetic name\, inspired by a provocative article by Dan Longboat and Joe Sheridan\, reflects our shared desires to learn\, evolve\, and deepen our understandings\, as non-Indigenous residents of Mi’kma’ki\, of “the relationship between where one is and what one thinks”. In their article\, Longboat and Sheridan write that “Old growth minds…build an ecology of mind that stands in the middle of the  temporal arc to see future and past synchronically in equal bending horizons.” Contemplating the rhythms and cycles of the living earth through our work\, the histories of this place and its possible futures\, we take the first steps along a path to Becoming Old Growth—shifting away from disconnection and placelessness towards “recovering the necessary relationship between healthy ecologies of land and human minds.” \n \nLeft: Susanne Chui (Photo credit: Béatrice Schuler-Mojon)\nCentre: Erin Donovan (Photo credit: Courtney Mac Photography)\nRight: Basma Kavanagh (Photo credit: James Arthur MacLean) \nSocial Media Tags:\n@BOG_collective\n@chui.susanne\n@hearhereproductions\n@basma.kavanagh \n

SUMMARY:Portrait of the Artist as an Essential Worker
DESCRIPTION:NEW: ASL interpretation will be available\n\n \n\nWork by Sarah Mosher and Hannah Genosko\nIn collaboration\, Mosher and Genosko use printmaking and textile processes to illustrate their experiences as essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are both professional artists who were employed in ‘casual’ day jobs in sectors that were labeled essential and became full-time during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and Canada Post\, respectively. With their similar experiences they dig deeper into the ‘essential’ label where art and work don’t often intersect. They explore the repetitive nature of labour through the repetitive nature of printmaking\, and create images relevant to their experience; the images are printed on the uniforms they and their coworkers wore during their time of essential sector work. Folk quilting traditionally uses old clothes and other found materials for utility\, and the shape of the garments inform the geometry of the quilt. The uniforms are sewn into quilted banners that do not follow a traditional repeating pattern or conform to a rectangle\, but rather use patchwork and appliqué techniques to create an uncertain feeling. This method reflects the ever-changing and disjointed nature of the pandemic. \nSarah’s instagram is @realpzzazz \nTwo large quilts on display at the Bus Stop Theatre\, April 1st to June 30th \nReception and Artist Talk\, May 3rd 5:00PM – 7:00PM \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Bread & Roses: Can You See Us?
DESCRIPTION:English & French bilingual performance | Performance bilingue anglais-français\n>>Register Here for FREE Childcare\nASL interpretation will be available\n\n \n“Bread and Roses: Can you see us?” is an original performance created by visual artist and labour organizer Tricia Robinson Illustration (she/her) and poet and social justice activist Laura Doyle Péan (they/them). This collaborative performance tackles topics of invisibilized labour\, union work\, collective liberation and the importance of solidarity in the face of intersecting social crises.  Building on their decade of community organizing experience within the labour\, racial\, social and climate justice movements\, the two tiohtià:ke/mooniyang (Montréal) based artists attempt to shine light on forms of labour that are too often hidden and devalued. \nLive on stage\, Tricia will create original visual artwork in several mediums as Laura Doyle Péan recites some of their moving poetry  with themes of domestic and care labour\, activism\, unions\, and freedom. The conception of Tricia’s art pieces will be projected onto a  screen\, allowing the audience to witness her creation process live and close up. The projection of her work will serve to honour the  labour and care that goes into creating illustrations\, embroideries and linocuts\, hence putting emphasis on our understanding of art as  labour\, as well as pridefully using mediums that have such a rich history within liberation and activist movements. Unapologetically feminist and pro-worker\, Tricia and Laura\, with care and devotion\, are using this performance as a way to open conversations about  the labour movement and unionism as a whole\, and the importance of recognizing forms of labour that have historically been  undervalued\, criminalized\, and disregarded. \n \n\nBios:\nTricia \nTricia Robinson is an illustrator\, photographer and labour organizer located in Montréal\, Canada. She has been working  creatively in whatever she can get her hands on since the early 2000s and has been a freelancer since 2013. Initially shying away from having personal politics and social issues merging with her work\, these themes are now what completely encompass her  creative work. Her work often adds elements of humour and hope to important topics like workers’ rights\, labour activism\, the perils  of capitalism on our well-being\, and the importance\, value\, and future liberation of the working class. She is a music college drop out  with self taught skills and a very strong determination to be her own boss. She also absorbed skills and experience from the  abundance of love\, support\, and skill sharing from her community. Her illustration career coincides with her work within labour  unions in Canada\, and her drive and desire to educate and authentically empower workers to collectively fight for their rights. She is part of the founding of Syndicat General in Montreal\, a new trade labour union that helps workers organize and build combative and  durable unions\, whether their workplace has 2-2000 employees. \nInstagram: @triciarobinsonillustration\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/triciarobinsonillustration\nWebsite: www.triciamakes.com \n  \nLaura: \nLaura Doyle Péan (they/them) is a 24-year-old queer Haitian-Quebecois multidisciplinaryartist\,  poet and activist whose  practice focuses on the role of art in social movements. Laura published their first book\, Cœur Yoyo\, in 2020. The English translation  of their book\, Yo-yo Heart\, came out in 2021 with the 87 press. Laura holds a column in the literary magazine Lettres Québécoises\,  and has published poems and short stories in many others. They are also a member of the editorial committee of the literary magazine  Moebius\, and have sat on many literary prize juries\, including\, most recently the jury for Radio-Canada’s poetry prize. Born in  Nionwentsïo (Quebec city)\, where they first got involved in intersectional feminist\, LGBTQIA2S+\, migrant justice and racial justice  organizing\, they moved to Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montreal) in 2019\, to attend university. There\, they joined the fossil fuel  divestment movement\, and made their first steps in union organizing to fight for a better collective agreement for their coworkers and  themselves. These experiences led them to gain a renewed understanding of the inextricability of the struggles for workers’ rights and the struggles for climate justice. \nInstagram: @esmeralda_dpxx \nCredit for the photo of Laura: Amélie Marcil – https://www.facebook.com/ameliemarcilgraphiste \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Canadian Labour International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Mayworks Kjipuktuk/Halifax Festival of Working People in the Arts is proud to partner once again with the Canadian Labour International Film Festival for a satellite screening of films from their 15th annual festival.\n\nThe screening takes place November 10\, 7:30 PM\, at the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op.\n\nThis year\, we will be screening Bergie (South Africa) by Dian Weys\, Shiringa: Amazon White Gold (Peru) by Oscar Akamine\, Lentejas (Spain) by José A. Campos\, HongKongers:A Re-Collection – My Destiny or My Choice? (UK) by Green Bean Media\, Allegory (Spain) by Tino Fernández\, Puanum (Dream) (Canada) by Josée Benjamin\, and Serigne (Spain) by Rodrigo Hernandez Tejero\, Adriana Cardoso Navarro\, & Edu Marin.\nAll films are translated as needed through subtitles in English.\n\nTotal run time: 87 minutes. The screening will be followed by a moderated discussion for those interested.\n\nAdmission is by donation.\n\n\n\nTHE FILMS:\n\nBergie (South Africa) by Dian Weys (7 min)\nThe term “bergie” is a South Africanism that refers to people that are homeless. This short film presents the viewer with a problem – a law enforcement officer has to remove homeless people sleeping on a path in the city in order to make way for a 10km fun-run. To do this\, he has to wrestle with fundamental questions about the dignity of human life. Language: English & Afrikaans.\n\n\n\n\nShiringa: Amazon White Gold (Peru) by Oscar Akamine (9 min)\nThis documentary follows Jorge Escompani\, a “Shiringa” master\, as he shows us how he extracts natural latex from the Shiringa tree. The extraction of latex from the Shiringa tree has led to the death of thousands of indigenous people due to slavery during “the fever of latex” in the 19th century. Current practices reflect a respectful relationship between the trees and those who depend on it for survival. Language: English & Spanish.\n\n\n\n\nLentejas (Spain) by José A. Campos (8 min)\nA humorous look at the gig economy and what work is like right now for many white collar workers who have to hustle for every contract and need multiple contracts to make a living. Workers can be anywhere – it just depends on the backdrop\, and how long you can hold the illusion together.  “Lentils (Lentejas): if you want\, eat them; if you don’t\, leave them.” Language: Spanish.\n\n\n\n\nHongKongers:A Re-Collection – My Destiny or My Choice? (UK) by Green Bean Media (18 min)\nThis documentary follows the experience of Siu Tat MUNG\, who was a leader in the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU)\, as he recounts his experiences during the last few years it was in existence. HKCTU members voted to disband the union on October 3\, 2021\, following pro-democracy protests in 2019-2020. At least 29 Hong Kong trade unions were dissolved throughout 2021. Siu Tat Mung explains the conditions in Hong Kong and the reasons for asking his family to relocate to Great Britain. Through his story we are able to experience the difficult situation evolving for Trade Unionists and others working in Hong Kong in 2021. Language: Cantonese.\n\n\n\n\nAllegory (Spain) by Tino Fernández (13 min)\nTen participants are about to start a race in which the most important thing is not to win\, but to arrive\, in the race of their lives. This film is an allegory for the working class about class struggle and life. It raises good questions through its poetic approach about what life is all about. Language: Spanish.\n\n\n\n\nPuanum (Dream) (Canada) by Josée Benjamin (5 min)\nThis short documentary\, directed by an Innu filmmaker\, features Jordan\, a young french speaking\, indigenous fisherman. As we spend a typical day on his boat fishing for whelk\, he tells us the story of his journey towards becoming the captain of a fishing boat. Language: French.\n\n\n\n\n\nSerigne (Spain) by Rodrigo Hernandez Tejero\, Adriana Cardoso Navarro\, & Edu Marin. (27 min)\nIn this extraordinary documentary\, we follow Serigne Mbay\, a politician\, and his inspirational story\, as he works to educate his fellow citizens and politicians about the effects of current European fishing trade agreements on his home country of Senegal. The landscapes and the portraits of the people in this film are breathtakingly beautiful. Language: Spanish.
