SUMMARY:The View From Her(e)
DESCRIPTION:A New Dance Piece by Liliona Quarmyne\nChoreographed by Liliona Quarmyne\n Featuring Liliona Quarmyne\, Jacinte Armstrong & Sarah Rozee \nIs it possible to maintain the abstraction of contemporary art and still share a clear message? Or does one have to be compromised for the other? Choreographer Liliona Quarmyne is deeply curious about pushing the boundaries between art and activism\, and about the give and take between the two. SUMMARY:Untitled (Applying Joint Compound)
DESCRIPTION:Video installation / performance by Michael Di Risio\nUntitled (Applying Joint Compound) (2016) is a video-installation and performance that attempts to make visible the labour involved in maintaining public spaces. Though often unseen and undervalued\, maintenance work is a fundamental component of the production of social space\, in turn supporting other forms of collective work and cultural production. Through a reflection on the nuances of this work\, the viewer is invited to consider what is involved in the production of the spaces that they typically inhabit. \nNOTE: While the performance will take place on May 2nd at 7pm\, the video installation will remain in the Bus Stop Theatre lobby from May 2nd to May 4th. \nMichael Di Risio\nAn artist and writer currently based in Kingston\, ON. His writing has appeared in Art Papers\, Afterimage\, Fuse Magazine\, C Magazine and PUBLIC Journal\, among others\, where he reflects on art as a social force. He has participated in recent exhibitions at the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre\, Artcite and Museum London\, with forthcoming exhibitions at the Thames Art Gallery and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. He holds an MFA from the University of Windsor and is currently the Artistic Director of Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre. \n  \nPresented in partnership with the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op

SUMMARY:Spring Break From Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:A Reception for the Common Good\nJoin us after the International Worker’s Day Rally & March for a mini Spring Break From Capitalism at our all-inclusive resort at the Bus Stop Theatre. Free from pesky bosses micromanaging your workflow and making inappropriate remarks\, a micro-vacation with us will offer you time for a little much needed R&R&R&R (rest and relaxation and resistance and revolution). \nYour massive student debts and monthly car payments will disappear (from view at least)\, giving you ample opportunity to work on your tan. And after a few glorious minutes of digging your toes into the sand of our smooth sandy beach\, your crushing social anxiety will noticeably subside. Are the fears of rising rental costs and the impending climate crises getting the better of you? It might be time for you to swim over to our beach-side bar and try one of our non-alcoholic Daiquiris – “Sunny Vitamin D” for a long winter complete with real Vitamin D\, or “¡Ya Basta!” our revolutionary’s yerba matté slushie. No exploitative capitalist enterprises or colonial celebrations here\, we offer a break from your day-to-day oppressive monolithic super-structures. You can forget all about the cold dark shadow of misogynist authoritarianism that’s cast clear across the globe inciting fear and hate and violence when you and your friends relax in one of our hammocks under our daylight-spectrum simulating lights. \nOh\, and did we mention we’ll have free ice cream? Yes\, special Bread & Roses ice cream cones offered by Dee Dee’s Ice Cream. Yum! \nDeveloped by Zachary Gough and presented in partnership with Dee Dee’s Ice Cream \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Fortune and Men's Eyes: a staged reading presented by Queer Acts
DESCRIPTION:Presented Queer Acts\nHow do we confront important but dated pieces from the queer theatre cannon? Queer Acts will host a staged reading of the classic play Fortune and Men’s Eyes\, debating its importance in the history of queer theatre\, and asking the question: is this script still relevant? \nWritten in 1967\, Fortune and Men’s Eyes was a groundbreaking piece examining themes of homosexuality and sex slavery. It shocked audiences and critics\, and has gone on to be an essential\, and controversial\, play in the history of Canadian theatre.\nSet in a Canadian prison for youth\, John Herbert’s play deals with society’s injustice towards gay men\, the brutality and homosexuality within prisons\, the corruption of police and guards\, and the need for friendship\, affection\, and love between prisoners. \nQueer Acts will host this reading with a gender-neutral cast. While seen as the portrayal of a time and place\, the piece is considered problematic\, laced with cliches and upsetting language. Does the piece still have relevance today or is it a dated script that speaks only to a time now forgotten? The reading will include a moderated discussion on queer history in Canada\, incarceration of homosexuals\, and queer theatre. Queer Acts looks forward to presenting this engaging script and discussion in a relaxed setting where all are welcome. \n
