Mayworks Kjipuktuk/Halifax stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine and denounces both the immediate and savage assault on Gaza, and the ongoing colonial occupation of Palestine by the state of Israel.

We support the calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and encourage everyone to support the global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against the state of Israel.

We encourage unions and union members to get involved in coordinated efforts through the Labour 4 Palestine network.

We proudly echo The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op’s statement on the matter:

The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op continues to stand in solidarity with Palestinians and continues to denounce the military and settler occupation of Palestine by the state of Israel.

We echo calls for an immediate Ceasefire in Gaza supported by numerous UN agencies working on the ground as well as the UN General Assembly.

Just as we stand against colonial violence at home, we must denounce it in all instances.

As members of the co-operative movement, we espouse values of equity, solidarity and social responsibility. As such, we have a responsibility to speak out against the violent aggression perpetrated against the people of Palestine.

As Jewish Voice for Peace explains:
The violence between Israelis and Palestinians is often falsely presented as a conflict between two equal sides with irreconcilable claims to one piece of land.

In reality, this is a conflict over territory between a nation-state, Israel, with one of the world’s most powerful and well-funded militaries, and an indigenous population of Palestinians that has been occupied, displaced, and exiled for decades.

What you can do:

Encourage those in our own communities to inform themselves about the occupation of Palestine; denounce all acts of racism, white supremacy, islamophobia and antisemetism.

Encourage everyone to support the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to comply with international law.

Call on representatives of the Canadian government to withdraw support to the state of Israel until it complies with UN resolutions that demand an end to settlements and work toward a peaceful rehabilitation of Palestine’s autonomy and self-determination.
