Downtown Tour 2: Scratch the Surface

  • The tour is an easygoing 90 minutes in duration with regular stops for discussion along the way.
  • The tour starts at the Memorial Library and ends at the Corner of Duke and Hollis Street.
  • Accessible washrooms, water and parking are available near both ends of the tour.
  • The tour runs almost exclusively over and downhill with the only exception being as we cross the Grand Parade where we move up hill at a long low grade.
  • The itinerary crosses through intersections with curb cuts and follows sidewalks that are in good shape.
  • Places to sit or lean are present at most tour stops.

PLEASE NOTE: Route notes are for the route followed AFTER the stop described.

Introduction Location: Corner of Spring Garden and Brunswick Street wall

Note: There is a paved path to get to this location inside the wall and there is no need to move onto the grass. There are options to sit on the grass or on the wall. Accessible public washrooms and water are available at the Central Branch of the Public Library.

Route: Walk along the path inside the wall heading toward Doyle Street.

Notes: Paved path, no change in grade.

Stop 1: Near the Service Entrance of the Memorial Library

In view of Folklore Centre and Doyle Street.

Notes: Paved path and grass available. There is the option to sit on several walls or on the grass.

Route: Move back down the path crossing in front of the Memorial Library entrance to the exit on Grafton Street. Turn left on Grafton continue to Blowers. Turn Right on Blowers and then left on Argyle Street. Stop midway down Argyle to in front of The Bitter End.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. The route goes at a low grade until Grafton Street and has a slightly steeper grade between Grafton and Argyle.

Stop 2: Argyle Street in front of the Bitter End

Notes: This location has ample room for participants. There may be public benches available.

Route: Continue down Argyle to Sackville. Stop on at the corner across the street from Durty Nelly’s pub and in front of the Neptune Theatre.

Notes: Pavement, no change in grade.

Stop 3: Corner of Argyle and Sackville, across Sackville from Durty Nelly’s in front of Neptune Theatre

Notes: We will stop in front of Neptune Theatre where there is more room to gather. There may be public benches available. There are walls to lean on.

Route: Turn right onto Sackville, at Barrington Cross Sackville and turn left onto Barrington.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. The route goes at a somewhat steep grade moving downhill.

Stop 4: 1662 Barrington Street in front of Barrington Steakhouse

Notes: If possible, we will stop at this location. If it is too busy or our group is too large to make that possible in a safe manner, the location will be pointed out and discussed at our next stop. There is no place to sit at this location.

Route: Continue down Barrington. Cross Prince Street and turn left into the Grand Parade at the entrance in front of St. Paul’s Church.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. The route goes slightly up hill as it enters the Grand Parade.

Stop 5: In front of St. Paul’s Church, Grand Parade

Notes: Paved path and grass available. There may be picnic tables to sit on, otherwise, there is the option to sit on the grass.

Route: Cross Grand Parade heading toward City Hall and the Northwest exit onto Argyle. Continue right on Argyle toward Duke. Cross Duke.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. This route goes up hill at a low grade.

Stop 6: Northwest Corner of Argyle and Duke Streets, in front of Duke Tower

Notes: We will stop outside of Duke Tower where there is room to gather. There are places to sit and lean. There may be public benches available.

Route: Turn right on Duke Street. Cross Barrington and continue to the corner of Granville.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. This route goes downhill at a medium to steep grade for the first block and a low to medium grade for the second block.

Stop 7: North West corner of Duke and Granville

Notes: We will stop at the street side of Granville Plaza. There may be public benches available.

Route: Continue on Duke to Hollis. Cross Hollis and then cross Duke to the Southeast corner.

Notes: There are curb cuts and sidewalks the entire route. This route goes downhill at low grade.

Stop 8: South East Corner of Duke and Hollis

Notes: This stop is a wide paved area with places to sit. This is the last stop on the tour. Accessible public washrooms and water are available two blocks East at the Ferry Terminal or two blocks South at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
